An autumn leaf in a child's hand

News and Updates

At Thornbury, we believe that every child has the potential to achieve great things. That's why we are committed to providing a dynamic, supportive learning environment that helps our pupils thrive.

Foundation - Our Learning - 25th November

Maths:

This week, our focus was subitising, finding and representing numbers between 1 - 5. We encouraged the children to subitise groups of 4 and 5 items. This allowed them to develop an understanding of what each number looks like, and what it is made up of. Subitising refers to instantly recognising the number of objects or items in a group without needing to count them.

In the Maths turf tray the children were encouraged to recognise the numerals and pick up (with chopsticks) and count the resources to match the numeral.

Literacy: This week we have been continuing to explore the story of the Little Red Hen.

In the Sensory tray the children can grind their own flour and bake their own bread using a range of different tools. The children will also be encouraged to make links to the story or retell the story in their own words.

This week we are thinking about who? words (orange). We know this is the character. In the enhanced provision, the children can draw the characters or make their own character puppet to re-tell the story.

The children also use their cutting and sticking skills to sequence the story of the Little Red Hen.

Team work:

We have enjoyed using the big construction. The children worked together to build a structure, taking care to join the pieces. They even built a door and leavers! When it fell over, they worked together to fix it and overcome the problem. Some used it as a house. Others decided it was an ice-cream shop… but they sold out of ice-cream! It was so wonderful to see so many children working together. Great work Friendly Otters!

Flower Counting:

The children enjoyed practising their gardening and counting skills. Here they carefully filled a plant pot with soil, read the digit on the flower pot and planted the correct amount of flowers.

Colour mixing:

The children have enjoyed exploring the colour mixing activity outside. It was wonderful to listen to their conversations. There were lots of awe and wonder moments. The children were talking about the colours and asking 'I made green, how did that happen?' and 'what would happen if I mixed yellow and red?' Well done for being Curious Cats.

Balance Bikes:

the children are growing in confidence at using the different bikes, trikes and scooters. This week, we have seen children growing in cofiedence at using the balance bikes. Well done Resilient Lions.
