Foundation - Our Learning This Week - 21st October
In maths this week, we have been subitising groups of 1, 2 and 3 items. This has allowed the children to develop an understanding of what each number looks like, and what it is made up of. We used different images and stories that include groups of 1, 2 and 3 characters or objects to point out and encourage children to subitise. The children saw dots in different arrangements so that they don’t think a number representation such as 3 always appears in the same way
This learning continued into our enhanced provision where we could sort different images into 1, 2 or 3. Our challenge was to subitise instead on count each time.
We also had the tuff tray, where the children were encouraged to use different objects to identify the numbers 1,2,3 and match the number representation to the numeral.
We loved using the water tray where we could catch the ducks and ladybirds and subitising the amount of dots (1,2 or 3)
In the sand tray we loved used the sieve find different objects and sort them into 1, 2 or 3.
Linked to our season work, the children could explore collage to create an autumn tree. We know collage is cutting and sticking different objects to make a picture.
We are always tying to find new and exciting ways to develop our fine motor skills. This activity was a huge hit. The children loved using the hammers to tap the golf tees into the pumpkins. They also enjoyed using the magnifying glasses to explore te inside of the pumpkins.
We can't believe how well everyone is progessing with their phonics. It's so wonderful to see their confidence in writing flourish.
There are opportunities to develop our mark making in all our learning areas. However, this week the children have loved working collaboratively on large canvases. This week they enjoyed working together to decorate a pirate ship. This then led to me wonderful story telling. The children also enjoyed painting on the large easels outside. Look at these super creations. Well done for being Friendly Otters.
We have also enjoyed using the playground to draw or own self portrait in chalk. The playground was left looking like a colourful art gallery.
